Prince William and his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, always try to behave when they are in public. Behind closed palace doors, however, the tone is often quite different.

“Sausage” is probably the best-known and funniest nickname within the Royal Family. That’s what Prince Philip, †99, affectionately called his wife Queen Elizabeth, †96. But Prince William, 40, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, 41, don’t just call each other formally by their first names behind closed doors.

Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales tease each other with nicknames

In his new book, Gilded Youth: An Intimate History of Growing Up in the Royal Family, Tom Quinn takes a closer look at the couple’s private relationship, and according to the author, William has a special one Nickname for his wife, attributed to the late Queen.

While Kate often calls her husband “Babe” privately, a former palace employee told him, William has the nickname “Duchess of Dolittle” – “DoD” for short – for her. As Fox News reports, it is said to be a “gentle nod” to the Queen’s criticism that Kate did not have a full-time career before marrying the prince in 2011.

Kate teases William about his bald head

But the 41-year-old is known to be good at countering. She teases William with his almost non-existent hair and jokingly calls him “baldy”, meaning “bald man”, while he is annoyed by her “endless mane of hair”, reports “The Sun”. In more loving moments, William is also said to call his wife “Babykins”.

In a 2007 interview, Prince William also revealed that his mother, Princess Diana, † 36, called him “Wombat” – a pet name that accompanied him into adulthood.

Quarrels where “they throw things at each other”

But like in any good marriage, William and Catherine sometimes have minor frictions. Author Tom Quinn reports that the heir to the throne in particular should often lose his temper. “Someone in the palace told me about the nicknames they have for each other. But it’s not all nice. They have horrible fights where they throw things at each other,” was his shocking revelation. “Kate may seem like a very quiet person, and so does William. But that’s not always the case. Because the big stress for William and Kate is that they’re constantly by [Palastmitarbeitern] are surrounded.”

As quickly as the two may fall out, they make up quickly because while William is “a bit hotheaded,” Kate has a “Buddhist calm.”
