When it comes to rugby, Prince William and wife Catherine, Princess of Wales become rivals. On the way back after the rugby game between England and Wales, the heir to the throne expected a “tense” atmosphere between him and his loved one. After all, the two were cheering on different teams.

Prince William, 40, and wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, 41, found themselves in an unusual situation on Saturday February 25, 2023. Instead of pulling together as usual, the two spouses suddenly became rivals. They stood together in the stands for the Six Nations rugby match at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, but cheered on opposing teams. William is patron of Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), while his sweetheart holds that role at English Rugby Football Union, having taken over from Prince Harry, 38, last year.

Catherine, Princess of Wales chose “diplomatic” coat

Before the sell-out game began, they caught up with injured former players supported by the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust to chat with them. The Prince of Wales couldn’t help but make a cheeky comment about his wife’s choice of clothes. He described her coat in red and white houndstooth – the colors of both teams – as “diplomatic”.

Prince William: ‘It’s going to be a tense drive’

However, Kate’s coat didn’t detract from the rivalry between the two. As William openly admitted, he expected some disharmony on the trip home because of his and his wife’s support of different teams. “It’s going to be a tense drive home no matter who wins,” he joked, according to The Telegraph. “If we win tonight, my wife won’t speak to me. It’s going to be a tense evening.” Kate must have been in a better mood after all, England won 20 – 10.
