Since Princess Kate (42) made her cancer diagnosis public in March, the official social media accounts of “The Prince and Princess of Wales” have been largely silent. A few days ago, Prince William (41) spoke out for the first time with a personal message and commented on the resignation of an English national soccer player. Now, for the first time, there is a message signed by both royals.

“We are shocked and sad”

“We are shocked and saddened by the terrible events in Sydney this morning,” it said in an X post and an Instagram story. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected, including the families of the victims and the heroic rescue workers who risked their own lives to save others.” The short text is signed with the initials “W & C”, for “William” and “Catherine”.

In a shopping center in the Australian metropolis of Sydney on Saturday afternoon (local time) a man attacked around nine people with a knife. Five people died on site and another succumbed to his injuries in hospital. A nine-month-old baby was among the injured. The alleged perpetrator was then caught by the police, shot and died. According to the police, there was initially no evidence of a motive or ideology.

As a member of the Commonwealth, Australia has the British King Charles III. (75) as head of state. He has not yet commented on the tragedy. Despite his cancer diagnosis, which he made public at the beginning of February, the monarch wants to go on a two-week state visit down under this year.

When will Kate and William return to the public eye?

It is not known when Prince William and Princess Kate will appear at an official appointment again for the first time. After Kate’s diagnosis, the heir to the throne initially canceled all appearances and royal duties. Kate is currently undergoing treatment and the couple’s three children are currently spending their school holidays at home. These will last until the end of April, and the 41-year-old may then have more time for royal tasks.

Regarding Princess Kate, Kensington Palace announced at the end of March: “The Princess will return to her public duties as soon as her medical team has cleared her to do so. She is in good spirits and is focused on her full recovery.”
