Prince William: Camilla is not the step-grandmother for his children

Their relationship is considered warm, but Prince William makes no compromises: although his mother Diana has been dead for 25 years and his children only know Camilla alongside her grandfather Charles, they are said to not be allowed to call the queen step-grandmother.

For Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4, it may still be a little strange. But her father Prince William, 40, wants to draw a clear line and let them know that while Queen Camilla, 75, is a beloved family member, she is not her grandmother. In her book Camilla: From Outcast to Queen Consort, author Angela Levin claims that King Charles’ eldest son, 73, made it clear to his offspring that their grandfather’s wife is not their step-grandmother.

Prince William: His children have two grandfathers and only one grandmother

In her remarks, Levin examines the relationship between the monarch’s second wife and her husband’s children and grandchildren. “Amanda MacManus [eine von Camillas vertrauten Assistentinnen, Anmerkung der Redaktion] has a positive opinion of Camilla being a stepmother,” she writes, continuing, “Her Royal Highness is a very warm hearted woman so I would imagine it would all be pretty good. She has her own kids and grandkids, so she wouldn’t try to take other kids away from someone else,” Levin surmises, explaining, “Having her around is more of a bonus. She loves children and the more the merrier.”

Nevertheless, according to her research, William seems to want to convey a subtle distance to his children. “William has nevertheless made it clear that Camilla is his father’s wife but not a step-grandmother to his children and that Prince George, his sister Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have two grandfathers but only one grandmother.”

A sign for Princess Diana († 36)?

A decision that is probably also related to his deep loyalty to his late mother Princess Diana, † 36. Camilla is still considered in many minds today as the woman who was the stumbling block in his parents’ marriage.

Charles was romantically involved with Camilla from a young age. The two met at a polo match at Windsor Great Park in 1970. The son of Queen Elizabeth, †96, and Prince Philip, †99, and the daughter of Army officer Major Bruce Shand, †89, and his wife Rosalind, †72, found each other through their shared love of nature.

The two met a few times before the heir to the throne at the time joined the Royal Navy. After eight months, Charles returned. But by then, Camilla was already engaged to Andrew Parker Bowles, 82. The two married in 1973 and divorced in 1995.

Charles and Camilla always stayed connected

The Prince of Wales married Diana Spencer in 1980. Their firstborn William was born two years later. Prince Harry, 38, was born in 1984. Rumors of an affair between the monarch’s son and his old love Camilla were already circulating at this point.

In 1992, Charles and Diana separated. Two years later, the royal publicly admitted to cheating on his wife. In a documentary about his life, he was asked if he was faithful to her. “Yeah, yeah…until it crashed irretrievably, we both tried,” he replied. An indirect admission of guilt, it seemed.

In January 1995, Camilla and her husband Andrew also made it public that their marriage was ending. A few months later, Diana gave her sensational BBC interview with journalist Martin Bashir, 59. In this context, the historic sentence fell: “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit full.”

Camilla becomes a family member

Finally, in April 2005, Charles and Camilla walked down the aisle. The Queen’s new daughter-in-law was given the title Duchess of Cornwall, presumably to avoid disagreements about taking over the title of the late Diana.

Seventeen years after joining the royal family, Queen Elizabeth knighted her son’s second wife. In February 2022, she made it clear in a public statement that she wanted Camilla by his side after Charles’ accession to the throne as Queen Consort.

An urgent wish, which was followed after the death of the monarch on September 8, 2022.
