Prince William: Clear boundary between his children and Queen Camilla

His children don’t see Camilla as their stepgrandmother

Prince William and Queen Camilla generally have a good relationship with each other.

Their relationship is considered cordial, but Prince William makes no compromises: Although his mother Diana has been deceased for 26 years and his children only know Camilla alongside their grandfather Charles, they are supposedly not allowed to call the Queen stepgrandma.

Things might still be a little strange for Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5. But her father Prince William, 41, wants to draw a clear line and convey to them that Queen Camilla, 76, is a beloved family member, but not their grandmother. In her book “Camilla: From Outcast to Queen Consort,” author Angela Levin claims that King Charles’ eldest son, 74, made it clear to his offspring that their grandfather’s wife was not their step-grandmother.

Prince William: His children have two grandfathers and only one grandmother

In her remarks, Levin sheds light on the relationship between the monarch’s second wife and her husband’s children and grandchildren. “Amanda MacManus [eine von Camillas vertrauten Assistentinnen, Anm. d. Red.] has a positive opinion about Camilla being a stepmother,” she writes, continuing: “Her Royal Highness is a very warm-hearted woman, so I would imagine everything would be pretty good. She has her own children and grandchildren, so she wouldn’t try to take other children away from someone else,” Levin suspects, explaining: “Having them around is more like a bonus. She loves children and the more the merrier.”

Nevertheless, according to her research, William seems to want to emphatically convey a subtle distance to his children. “William has nevertheless made it clear that Camilla is his father’s wife but not a step-grandmother to his children, and that Prince George, his sister Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have two grandfathers but only one grandmother.”

A sign for Princess Diana (†36)?

A decision that is probably also related to his deep loyalty to his late mother Princess Diana, †36. In many minds, Camilla is still seen as the woman who was the stumbling block in his parents’ marriage.

Charles was romantically involved with Camilla from a young age. The two met in 1970 at a polo match in Windsor Great Park. The son of Queen Elizabeth, †96, and Prince Philip, †99, and the daughter of army officer Major Bruce Shand, †89, and his wife Rosalind, †72, found each other over their shared love of nature.

The two met a few times before the then heir to the throne joined the Royal Navy. After eight months, Charles returned. But by then Camilla was already engaged to Andrew Parker Bowles, 83. The two married in 1973 and divorced in 1995.

Charles and Camilla always remained close

The Prince of Wales married Diana Spencer in 1981. Their firstborn, William, was born a year later. Prince Harry, 39, was born in 1984. Rumors that the monarch’s son was having an affair with his old love Camilla were already emerging at this point.

In 1992, Charles and Diana separated. Two years later, the royal publicly admitted that he had cheated on his wife. In a documentary about his life, he was asked if he remained faithful to her. “Yes, yes…until it broke down irretrievably, we both tried,” he replied. An indirect admission of guilt, it seemed.

In January 1995, Camilla and her husband Andrew also made it public that their marriage was over. A few months later, Diana gave her sensational BBC interview with journalist Martin Bashir, 60. It was during this context that the historic sentence came: “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

Camilla becomes a member of the family

In April 2005, Charles and Camilla finally walked down the aisle. The Queen’s new daughter-in-law was given the title Duchess of Cornwall, presumably simply to avoid disagreements about taking over the title from the now deceased Diana.

Seventeen years after joining the royal family, Queen Elizabeth awarded her son’s second wife a knighthood. In February 2022, she made it clear in a public statement that she wanted Camilla at his side as Queen Consort after Charles ascended the throne.

An urgent wish that was fulfilled after the monarch’s death on September 8, 2022.
