Prince William has his worst memories of Scotland – he learned of his mother’s death there – and some of his fondest memories.

During a stay in Edinburgh, Prince William (38) spoke about his most important memories that he associates with Scotland. The country is “incredibly important to him and will always have a special place in my heart,” said the Royal. as reported by the British “BBC”. There he found out about the death of his mother, Princess Diana (1961-1997), but also met his future wife, Duchess Kate (39).

“I was at Balmoral when I was told my mother died”

“Scotland is the source of some of my happiest memories, but also my saddest,” said William in his opening address to the Church’s general assembly. “I was at Balmoral when I was told my mother had died,” said the royal. Still in shock, he found a place of refuge that morning in a service in the parish church of Crathie Kirk. “And in the dark days of grief that followed, I found solace in Scottish nature,” he said. That is why the connection he feels with Scotland will always be deep.

“In addition to this painful memory, there is also one of great happiness,” said Prince William, because this year it was 20 years ago that he met his current wife in Scotland. It goes without saying that the city in which you meet this special person in your life also has a “very special place in your heart”. Kate and William both studied at the University of St Andrews in Edinburgh. The 38-year-old spent “four very happy and formative years” there.

Scotland is also important for other family members

Prince William was always in Scotland as a child. He also came along how his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II (95), “enjoyed every minute” that she spent there. His father, Prince Charles (72), is “never happier” than when he is hiking through the Scottish mountains. William can also remember the fun in the fresh air that he had as a child in Scotland, for example swimming in the lakes or at family barbecues with his grandfather, Prince Philip (1921-2021), who only died in April is.
