In a speech, Prince William addressed the protests that had repeatedly become loud during the Caribbean trip.

Prince William (39) and Duchess Kate (40) spend the last leg of their Caribbean trip in the Bahamas. On the penultimate evening (Friday), the future heir to the British throne gave an important signal at a gala hosted by Sir Cornelius Smith, Governor-General of the Bahamas.

He said the UK would support any decision by Jamaica, Belize and the Bahamas to break away from the British monarchy and become republics. Speaking to guests at the event, which included the country’s Prime Minister Philip Davis, he went on to explain that the ties between the UK and the three countries will “endure” whatever the future holds.

Specifically, the Duke of Cambridge said: “I know you are all looking forward to celebrating fifty years of independence next year – your Golden Jubilee. And as Jamaica celebrated its 60th anniversary this year and Belize last year its 40th To celebrate our passing, I want to say this: ‘We proudly and respectfully support your decisions about your future.’

Expected a big response

These statements are likely to attract attention not only in the three countries mentioned, but in the entire region, in which five other countries have Queen Elizabeth II (95) as head of state. Barbados took the historic step of replacing the Queen as head of state in November 2021. In the presence of the heir to the throne, Prince Charles (73), the country’s first president was elected.

In his speech, William not only spoke about major socio-political issues, he also shared a nice memory of his first visit to the Bahamas: “I came here with my mother as a child,” said Princess Diana’s son (1961-1997). “Snorkeling the James Bond wrecks off Nassau gave me the most vivid memory of the beautiful blue waters. For a little boy obsessed with 007, it was the best vacation ever,” he gushed.

Even before the royal couple had left the UK for the Caribbean, a local protest prompted organizers to change the planned itinerary on launch day in Belize. The protests followed William and Kate throughout the week.

Last Caribbean dates on Saturday

Over the course of Saturday, the Duke and Duchess will see the final dates of their trip. They will visit Abaco – a chain of islands and barrier cays in the northern part of the country – and join local residents at a church to share their experiences of Hurricane Dorian in 2019.

The couple will also visit a children’s home in Grand Bahama. On their last appointment, William and Kate will visit one of the 2021 Earthshot Prize winners, the environmental organization Coral Vita.
