Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, issued a joint statement on Saturday evening. The reason is tragic.

After Prince William, 41, was cheering on his son Prince George, 10, at the Emirates FA Cup final at London’s Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon, May 25, 2024. Just a few hours later, he had to deal with tragic news: a pilot was killed after a Spitfire crashed in a field near a Royal Air Force (RAF) base in Lincolnshire.

A tragedy that Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, 42, cannot leave uncommented. They issued a joint statement on Instagram on Saturday evening. “Incredibly sad to hear the news from RAF Coningsby this afternoon. Our thoughts this evening are with the pilot’s family, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the entire RAF family. W & C,” wrote the Prince and Princess of Wales on their official Instagram account.

According to the BBC, rescue services were called to the field on Langrick Road in Coningsby shortly before 1:20 p.m. local time on Saturday. The World War II-era aircraft belonged to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which is based at RAF Coningsby, the RAF said. “It is with great sadness that we confirm the death of an RAF pilot who was killed in a tragic accident near RAF Coningsby today. The pilot’s family has been informed and we ask that their privacy is respected at this difficult time,” said an official statement from the Royal Air Force. A “full investigation” is also to be carried out, and no details are yet known about the cause of the plane crash.
