Prince William + King Frederik: Historic photo published

Prince William is not the only one who will support the English team at the European Football Championship in Frankfurt. King Frederik will also be rooting for Denmark. Now the opponents have published a clear photo.

Prince William, 41, has planned a trip to Germany to watch this year’s European Football Championship. The son of King Charles, 75, who is a huge football fan, wants to cheer on the home team there, it was said a few days ago. Harry Kane, 30, captain of the English national football team, first revealed this. Shortly afterwards, royal correspondent Richard Palmer confirmed this in an article on X.

King Frederik meets Prince William in the Frankfurt stadium – a rare pleasure

Since Tuesday, June 18, 2024, it has been clear that the British heir to the throne will have royal competition. Football fan King Frederik, 56, will also be making his way to Frankfurt to cheer on the opposing team from Denmark. This was recently revealed in the palace’s official calendar. “HM The King will attend the men’s European Football Championship match between Denmark and England. Frankfurt Arena, Frankfurt, Germany, at 6 p.m.,” it said.

It is a rare pleasure, as it has been years since William and Frederik made a joint appearance. The last time they were together was also a European Championship football match: in 2021, Frederik and Queen Mary, 52, attended the England vs. Denmark match at London’s Wembley Stadium.

European Championship game in Frankfurt – and a historic royal moment

On Thursday, June 20, Frederik and William will pose for joint photos for the first time since 2021. The king’s daughter Princess Isabella, 17, will also be allowed to watch the Denmark vs. England match at the stadium in Frankfurt.

Although Frederik and William are opponents, it is still important to them to publish a joint photo on social media. “May the best team win,” they wrote diplomatically about the historic photo.

William also travels to Germany for the European Championship

At first it was just a rumor, but shortly afterwards Prince William’s trip to Germany was confirmed. Royal expert Richard Palmer, who has been reporting on the British royal family for over 20 years, revealed on Wednesday, June 12th that the heir to the throne would indeed fly to Germany for the European Football Championship. In Frankfurt am Main, William will support the English team, which will play against Denmark on Thursday, June 20th.

“As announced by Kensington Palace, The Prince of Wales, President of The Football Association, will attend the Euro 2024 group match between England and Denmark at the Frankfurt Arena on Thursday 20 June,” Palmer said on his X-profile.

Harry Kane reveals: Prince William is coming to Germany for the European Championship

Harry Kane was also apparently in on the plan. The record goalscorer, who has been under contract with FC Bayern Munich since August 2023, met the Prince of Wales along with the rest of his team on Monday, June 10, 2024, at St. George’s Park in Burton-on-Trent. There, the team was officially bid farewell before their flight to Germany, and the royal also wished the team good luck.

After the meeting, Kane told British media that he expected Prince William to be in Germany during the European Championships to support the English team. “He loves it,” said Kicker about the British heir to the throne. “I think he will try to attend some of the games, as long as his schedule allows. He’s a huge football fan.” Kane is certain: “He will watch.”

“His children are also big fans”

The striker also mentioned the offspring of William and his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, 42: “His children are obviously big fans now too,” said Kane about Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6. “They will remember their first, second tournament, just like I did when I was younger. We know how much this means to the country and the fans. And that includes everyone, from the royal to the store clerk. The whole nation comes together in this moment,” Kane continued.

Tips from Prince Louis for the English team

The professional sportsman joked that the team’s nutritionist would not be happy that William’s youngest offspring, Prince Louis, had advised the players to “eat twice as much” as normal ahead of the European Championships. Prince William, who is president of the English Football Association (FA), previously revealed that he was able to get tips for the team from his children on the way to school in the morning: “I was on the way to school with the children this morning and I said: ‘What should I say to the England team today?'” he said. “The best advice I can give you is to eat twice as much as you would normally eat.”
