Prince William’s anger after his trip to the Caribbean is said to be great. He supposedly wants to change some things in the monarchy. How are the chances?
Prince William (39) allegedly wants to completely overhaul the monarchy. According to royal experts, this could be a tough fight for Queen Elizabeth II’s grandson (95), who is second in line to the throne behind his father Prince Charles (73). Together with his wife Duchess Kate (40), the Duke of Cambridge has just returned from his controversial trip to the Caribbean, which was overshadowed by protests.
Some appearances by the royal couple in the former British colonies have also been criticized as “insensitive” in Great Britain. Now William and Kate want to push a change of strategy, reports the “Daily Mail”. William allegedly intends to break with the previous rules during his reign.
According to British media reports, he plans to gather fewer employees around him and make the monarchy “more flexible”. This also includes turning away from the Queen’s mantra: “Never complain, never explain”. Is it enough to replace decades-old rules to save the monarchy? Experts believe the next generation of royals must do even more.
Gradual change?
William is said to be more flexible than many think about his future role as king a source according to The Guardian. “There is a sense in the institution that the monarchy can update and change over time, but it must be incremental, subtle and carefully thought out.” One of those changes could be more diversity among palace staff, especially in senior positions.
And Philip Murphy, a professor at the University of London, said the palace is “engaged in an ongoing learning process” that balances tradition and public opinion. “Sometimes you have to abandon standard practices and reinvent the process, and that’s what we’re seeing here.”
Royal expert Russell Myers believes that the modernization of the monarchy is also about its survival. Speaking on Lorraine Kelly’s TV show, he said of William and Kate’s plans: “It’s absolutely about survival.” Prince William spoke about the need to change the monarchy, the monarchy has to move with the times and they are the modern faces of that monarchy.
