In two weeks, Princess Amalia will embark on her first major overseas voyage. The Dutch Crown Princess is visiting the Caribbean part of the kingdom with her parents King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. The program is already fixed.

It is the first longer tour abroad for the Dutch Crown Princess: At the end of January, Princess Amalia, 19, accompanied by her parents King Willem-Alexander, 55, and Queen Máxima, 51, will embark on a two-week trip to the Caribbean. The heir to the throne should get to know the Caribbean part of the kingdom. The program of the visit has now been announced by the Court.

Princess Amalia travels to the Caribbean

Like on the official website of the Dutch royal family read, Amalia, Máxima and Willem-Alexander will be touring the Caribbean from January 27th to February 9th. First they visit the islands of Bonaire, Aruba and Curaçao, before continuing to Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius and Saba. It continues: “The visit is dedicated to the introduction of the Princess of Orange to the Caribbean part of the kingdom.” The islands have therefore put together a program that focuses on culture, nature, the colonial past, defense operations, sports and encounters with the residents.

Colonial Past and Slavery

In the program it is noticeable that a central theme of the trip is the kingdom’s colonial past: On Bonaire Amalia, Máxima and Willem-Alexander visit former “slave huts” from the 19th century, on Curaçao there is a tour of the country house Knip and a former sugar plantation planned. The royals will therefore also talk to descendants of the slaves of the time.

Princess Amalia will also get to know the culture of the islands extensively and watch the reconstruction of Sint Maarten with her parents after the devastation of Hurricane “Irma” in September 2017. The Dutch royals will also visit several nature parks. The royal family has three days of rest between the various program items. Will Princess Amalia use the little break to enjoy the sun on the Caribbean beach?

Queen Máxima and King Willem-Alexander celebrate wedding anniversary

A highlight for the royal couple should be February 2nd. On that day, Máxima and Willem-Alexander celebrate their 21st wedding anniversary in a very special way: 21 residents of the island, who make an important contribution to society, are invited to a festive dinner in the evening in a cathedral on Curaçao.
