Princess Amalia has waived her right to a government allowance of 1.6 million euros. “I find it uncomfortable,” she wrote.

Just a few days ago, Princess Amalia (17), the eldest daughter of King Willem-Alexander (54) and Queen Máxima (50) of the Netherlands, passed her high school diploma. Now the future queen is making a name for herself with a noble gesture: The 17-year-old waives a state allowance of 1.6 million euros per year, which she would be entitled to from her 18th birthday.

This was announced by Prime Minister Mark Rutte (54). “I find it uncomfortable as long as I can bring little in return and other students have it so much more difficult, especially in this uncertain Corona time,” wrote the 17-year-old in a handwritten letter to the politician about her motives.

When Amalia turns 18 on December 7th, she has the right to an annual income of over 300,000 euros and an allowance of around 1.3 million euros – tax-free. In the past, many Dutch people had repeatedly criticized the high salaries of the future kings, which were financed by taxes.

Abitur with distinction

Princess Amalia had passed her final exam at the Christian high school Sorghvliet in The Hague on Thursday (June 10th) with summa cum laude. It is not yet known where she is going to study.
