Princess Diana: 10 Reasons She's the Ultimate Style Icon

Before Princess Diana was suddenly torn from life in a tragic car accident in Paris in 1997 at the age of only 37, she was already celebrated for her style. And to this day, over 20 years after her death, the queen of hearts is still one of the ultimate fashionistas – and rightly so.

Because Diana did not submit to fashion, she made it. The former kindergarten teacher had a mind of her own when it came to choosing her looks and refused the strict royal fashion protocol, much to the displeasure of the Queen, not just once. Whether a deep neckline, bare shoulders or legs – Diana was not stingy with her charms and made for some breathtaking and scandalous appearances.

So your so-called "Revenge Dress" (in German: revenge dress) will certainly never be forgotten. The black dress she wore shortly after Prince Charles publicly admitted his affair with then-Camilla Parker-Bowles. And their peculiarity of repurposing pieces of jewelery from the royal treasure trove still serves as a model for many trend addicts to this day, not to always take fashion too seriously. Diana loved wearing tight necklaces as a headband or simply dropping the Queen's pearl necklace over the back instead of the neckline.

The ex-wife of the future heir to the throne Prince Charles dominated the elegant appearance as well as the casual off-duty look. One of her favorite designers was the Englishwoman Catherine Walker, who was responsible for a large part of the official wardrobe of the nobles for around 16 years. Particularly nice: Diana's daughter-in-law, Duchess Kate, who she never got to know personally, loves the British label and is continuing her mother-in-law's legacy, even though the popular Duchess and wife of Prince William does not have the courageous fashion that Diana once did.

In our gallery we show you 10 looks that prove that Diana is still hardly fooled in terms of style.
