Blue eyeliner is one of Princess Diana’s iconic beauty looks — in fact, her makeup artist advised against it. Instead, she chose a different style for Diana that we also like to wear today.
What underliner is for Catherine, Princess of Wales, or her natural hair is for Queen Máxima, blue eyeliner was for Princess Diana, †36. After all, every royal has a particular beauty preference that they like to use. After all, everyone knows best what emphasizes their own best features and what looks particularly good on them. In fact, Princess Diana was advised against the beautiful blue eyeliner — by none other than her own make-up artist.
Princess Diana: Her blue signature eyeliner makes history
It doesn’t matter how much time passes: Princess Diana is considered an example of trends in fashion and beauty and set new standards, especially with her blue eyeliner. Her former make-up artist, Mary Greenwell, who now does Jessica Chastain’s make-up, once revealed in an interview with “Yahoo Beauty” that Lady Di was such a big fan of the style, because she loved to emphasize her eyes and at the same time apply a lot of mascara. Photos show that Diana is a light turquoise eyeliner and applied it directly to the waterline. Combined with black mascara, the look was perfect. The blue enhanced her personality, which was highly appreciated internationally.

“It’s just not appropriate”
Together with her make-up artist, Diana then began to remove the product from her beauty routine. In an interview with the “Daily Mail”, Mary Greenwell explains: “Leaving the blue eyeliner was probably her biggest change; in my opinion, it made her look older.” She herself would have preferred to see Lady Di with a softer version. She makes it more specific that these dramatic changes are not for official members of the Royal Family. “It’s just not appropriate,” she sums it up and changed Princess Diana’s style more serious. High-quality brands such as Chanel and Armani were used.
How Princess Diana’s look was changed
Greenwell used a black eyeliner, which she applied close to her upper and lower lash line. The close application was to avoid overloading Diana’s eye area.

However, her look was variable, with the definition around her eyes being particularly important to her. Diana did not always wear black liner, sometimes it was brown and sometimes she wore no liner at all, instead she wore a lot of mascara. The latter was one of the most important makeup tools for her makeup artist. One thing is certain: Princess Diana is still remembered for her expressive eye look today, and the blue and dark eyeliner looks are often used as models. After all, whatever you like is allowed!
