Can Princess Elisabeth also marry a woman?

After it was recently announced that Princess Amalia of the Netherlands, 17, could marry a woman if she so wished, the focus is now on Belgium. Is it also possible for Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, 19, to say yes to a woman? “In principle yes,” says the professor of discrimination law Jogchum Vrielink in the Radio 1 program “Nieuwe feiten” (in German: New facts). “Since there is no rule regarding the sex of the spouse, the Crown Prince or the Crown Princess can marry someone of the same sex since the marriage was opened. There does not seem to be anything against it,” he explains. Marriage for everyone, which has been possible in Belgium since 2003, therefore also includes heirs to the throne.

The Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, 45, also officially confirmed to the daily newspaper “Het Laatste Nieuws”: “A Crown Prince or Crown Princess has the same rights in this regard as all Belgians.” However, Princess Elisabeth does not seem to be entirely free in her decision. Because, according to Vreilink, there is a decree from 1830 which says “that the members of the House of Orange-Nassau [des niederländischen Königshauses, Anm. der Red.] are forever excluded from any power and authority in Belgium. “That has to do with the tensions that existed at the time between the Netherlands and the newly separated Belgium.” So we have a problem when Amalia and Elisabeth fall in love, “jokes Vrielink.
