While her big brother is Crown Prince of Denmark and therefore has a more solid plan, Princess Isabella has to find her way on her own. What could their future look like?

As second-borns, young royals certainly don’t always have it easy. What will the future look like and how can I escape the shadow of my first child? That could happen at the moment Ask Princess Isabella, 17, who needs to find a career independent of her royal duties.

Princess Isabella carries a difficult legacy

As the daughter of King Frederik, 55, and Queen Mary, 52, many doors should be open to Isabella – but there is also a shadow on her head, because all eyes are on her brother Prince Christian, 18. Regardless, Isabella now has to make plans for the future and try to build a career on her own. In a year she will turn 18 and from then on she will have to make her own decisions.

Royal expert Lars Hovbakke Sørensen tells “Se og Hør” possible future plans for the king’s daughter. One could lead her to the military. Like her grandmother Queen Margrethe, 84, she could complete her service. From 2026 there will be general compulsory military service in Denmark. This is a response to the changing security situation in Europe. Although Isabella will come of age in 2025 to enlist in the military, it is still within the realm of possibility. Sørensen believes this venture can send a strong signal because “there is a connection between the royal family and the military.”

Parallels between her and her uncle Prince Joachim

In addition to possible conscription, the 17-year-old could also take a cue from her uncle Prince Joachim, 54, who experienced a similar fate as the second-born. While his older brother was sure to take the throne, he had to find a way between being a royal and having his own career. As “Se og Hør” reports, there are some parallels between Isabella and her uncle. “I think Isabella’s life will be comparable to Joachim’s in many ways, because in today’s world it is natural for many people to go abroad on an educational trip, like Joachim did in Australia,” explains Lars Hovbakke Sørensen. So maybe she’ll follow his example, because this could be a time for her “when you’re not recognized.” In addition, as a royal you have to travel quite far away for that to actually be the case.

Isabella will find her way

Nevertheless: Despite her royal family, Isabella also has freedom and can build and develop her own career – probably much more freely than her brother Christian. The royal expert can imagine that Frederik and Mary certainly want to have a say, but also give their daughter space so that she can go her own way. She also has her two smaller siblings, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, both 13, who should take a lot of the pressure off her shoulders.
