A bit of Diana was there when the royals showed up at Sandringham on December 25th. Princess Kate chose a glittering tribute.

Princess Kate (41) was once again the fashion eye-catcher during the British royal family’s walk to the Christmas service. While the royal couple traditionally wore muted tones, she presented herself in bright blue. Her holiday look also included a small homage to her famous mother-in-law: she wore earrings that once… Princess Diana (1961-1997).

Kate got the earrings for her engagement

For the Christmas Day service at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Kate chose a blue Alexander McQueen coat and custom-made Gianvito Rossi Glen 85 boots. She paired it with Diana’s double teardrop sapphire earrings.

Before her accidental death, the first wife of King Charles III. (75) ordered in a letter what should happen to her jewelry collection in the future: “I would like you to allocate all of my jewelry to my sons’ share, so that their wives can have it or use it when the time comes. The exact division of the jewelry is up to me I at your discretion.” And so it was kept in the royal family. William (41) and Harry (39) received many of the valuable specimens.

Along with a sapphire engagement ring estimated to be worth around £300,000, Prince William also gave the earrings to his Kate after he proposed to her in 2010. The double-drop pair was originally received by Princess Diana, along with other jewels, as a wedding gift from Fahd of Saudi Arabia (1921-2005). She wore the full set when she attended a state reception in Brisbane in 1983. Two years later, she wore the jewelry again to celebrate the birth of Prince Harry.

Kate also loves the earrings set. The earrings are one of her most commonly worn pairs. The Princess of Wales is also a big fan of Alexander McQueen and wore the same coat in green during a trip to Boston.
