Spain’s heir to the throne receives a special award: Crown Princess Leonor is honored with the title of “adoptive daughter” by the city of Zaragoza, where she is currently completing her military training – a historic gesture.

Studied since August Princess Leonor, 18, at the Zaragoza Military Academy. Now the eldest daughter of King Felipe, 56, and Queen Letizia, 51, is being given a very special honor: the city of Zaragoza is naming the heir to the Spanish throne its “adoptive daughter.”

Zaragoza city council approves honorary title for Princess Leonor

As the Spanish portal “Vanitatis” reports, the decision has been made: Zaragoza voted in a plenary meeting of the city council on Thursday, April 25, 2024 to give Crown Princess Leonor the title of “adoptive daughter”. On the occasion of Leonor’s 18th birthday last October, the mayor of the city, Natalia Chueca, proposed making Leonor the city’s “adoptive daughter” – just as her father Felipe was named “adoptive son” in 1986 when he completed his military training in Zaragoza graduated. This proposal has now been accepted.

“Historical gesture” shows the city’s affection for the royal family

The daily newspaper “Heraldo de Aragón” writes that the appointment as adopted daughter does not mean a higher status, but is a “historic gesture” that expresses Zaragoza’s affection for the royal family. Title holders who were born in Zaragoza were given the designation “favorite son” or “favorite daughter”, otherwise “adoptive son” or “adoptive daughter”. The award honors people who have distinguished themselves through their cultural, scientific, social, artistic, political or economic merits or through their achievements for the benefit of the city. Mayor Chueca emphasized on Leonor’s 18th birthday that she plays a major role in “defending the democratic state” and “ensuring the country’s transition and continuity of stability.”

The date of the official award ceremony is not yet known

The city council would now like to thank Princess Leonor for her connection to the city where she is currently completing her military training. It is not yet clear when the award will be officially presented. The royal family will announce the time. Felipe’s official award ceremony took place on May 16, 1986, just a few days before completing his studies in Zaragoza.
