On October 31, 2023, Princess Leonor, the future Queen of Spain, will be 18 years old. Until then, there are still some important milestones for the heir to the throne.

Princess Leonor, 17, is currently studying at the General Military Academy in Zaragoza, Spain. The admission, orientation and adaptation phase began on August 17, 2023, and the placement tests for the cadets will then take place on August 31 and September 1. Leonor will also have to face these. The Ministry of Defense confirms this.

Princess Leonor starts her education

On August 31st, the teaching and training phase for the Spanish heir to the throne and her comrades will officially start. Leonor is thus traditionally following in the footsteps of her father, King Felipe, 55, and grandfather, Juan Carlos, 85. Unlike her fellow trainees, the 17-year-old completes the two-year training course in one year. She is sent straight to sophomore year and graduates from the academy as an ensign.

At the beginning of their training there is another symbolic event. On September 19, the students will be handed their sabers. This will officially introduce you to military life. With the saber, the student acquires “the obligation to adopt the ideals of honor, courage and fidelity set forth in the Cadet Decalogue”. The novices receive their sabers from the second-year students.

The next major event is already scheduled for October 7th. Princess Leonor and the other cadets take the oath of allegiance in the Patio de Armas (Eng.: Paradeplatz). As part of the ceremony, they have to kiss the Spanish national flag, symbolizing the oath and promise to defend Spain. It is very likely that Leonor’s parents, the Spanish royal couple, will be there.

Then, on October 20th, the Asturias Awards will be presented in Oviedo, Asturias, an event of particular importance to the Spanish royal family. Leonor will also be there and will probably give a speech again. It is understood that it will be the last appearance before her 18th birthday.

Princess Leonor comes of age

On October 31, the time has come: Leonor will be 18 years old. The day should be particularly exciting for the heir to the throne, as there are some challenges ahead that she has been preparing her whole life for. For example, before the Congress of Deputies, she will swear allegiance to the constitution and her father, King Felipe. From then on, she will concentrate fully on her studies and her obligations as heir to the throne.
