Although Princess Leonor is only 16 years old, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is already dealing with her choice of partner. This fact has caused controversy in the past.

Nothing is publicly known about the love life of Princess Leonor, 16. The daughter of King Felipe, 54, and Queen Letizia, 49, was probably on one or the other date. Perhaps she has even had her first relationship experiences. That wouldn’t be unusual at that age. But you can’t think about marriage just yet, right? The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs sees it differently and is already dealing with the choice of a wedding candidate.

Princess Leonor: What would happen if she…

A few days ago, candidates were asked a controversial exam question in a selection process for the diplomatic team of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As the online newspaper “Voz Populi” claims to have learned, one of the examinees was said to have been totally amazed when he was asked during the language test what would happen if Princess Leonor were a lesbian and married a woman?

The “very surprising” question caused a stir in diplomatic circles because Leonor was still a minor. “In the Dutch Parliament, this question was asked [2021] discussed because it first has to approve the marriage of the heir to the throne, but only when she has come of age, and Leonor is only 16,” says people close to her. The question is another example of “the abuse of the politicization of the agenda”, with which a limit has been crossed.

Spanish Foreign Ministry denies responsibility

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs told “Voz Populi” that it was not responsible for the exam questions. It was stated that this was not a written question. In the language test, the candidates are questioned verbally for 15 minutes on two topics – once in English, then in French. The members of the examination board would improvise the questions. Accordingly, an examiner asked the question about Leonor’s love decision spontaneously.

It was only in autumn 2021 that a claim that Princess Amalia, 18, should not marry a woman if she wanted to, triggered a fundamental debate in the European royal families. The question was discussed whether the royal heir to the throne should be allowed to marry same-sex or not. Some took a personal stand, others let politics do the talking.

Spanish law loopholes make royal marriage difficult for everyone

In Leonor’s case, there has been no official statement so far. According to radio station Onda Cero, in 2012 the Constitutional Court ruled that the law on same-sex marriage was fully constitutional. So Leonor could marry a woman.

However, the renowned constitutional lawyer Antonio Torres del Moral warned in “El Mundo” that there could be serious legal problems. For the Constitution was written in “manly” terms and in a “manly” spirit. Even men still have priority in the line of succession. The legislators have not (yet) dealt with the question. Either way, it remains to be seen who Leonor will choose if she wants to marry at all.
