Princess Mako and Kei Komuro were finally able to say yes. In a press conference that followed, the newlyweds apologized for any inconvenience their connection caused.

Princess Mako of Japan, 30, has stepped in front of the altar with her student love Kei Komuro, 30. They were married on October 26, 2021 at a civil ceremony – but there was no lavish ceremony.

A love with obstacles

The road to their wedding was rocky: they had been engaged for four years, their wedding date was postponed several times and the couple had to endure all sorts of negative reports. The reason: The fact that Japan’s princess marries a commoner and thus renounces her royal status caused displeasure. The financial scandal surrounding Kei Komuro’s mother also caused a stir. They even encounter protests on their wedding day: on the morning of their wedding ceremony, thousands of Japanese demonstrate: inside against the wedding.

In a press conference, the newlyweds now apologize for the “trouble” that caused their engagement.

Princess Mako: She justifies her wedding

The simple wedding ceremony, at which there was neither a reception nor a banquet, took place behind closed doors in a registry office in Tokyo. Following their marriage, the princess and her husband gave a press conference in a dreary function room of the Hotel Grand Arc, at which they apologized for any inconvenience caused by their connection, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Princess Mako begins her statement by speaking emotionally about her husband: She defends her decision to marry Kei because he is “irreplaceable” for her. “Our marriage is a necessary step so that we can protect our hearts,” she explains. She also criticizes the news reports written during her engagement. They spread false information and “one-sided rumors”, which triggered “sadness and pain” in her.

Kei Komuro stands by his wife

Kei Komuro also made a statement during the press conference. He apologizes for the grief, but emphasizes that he loves Mako and will support her in their life together. “I love Mako. We only have one life and I want to spend it with the woman I love,” he says.

He also mentions the post-traumatic stress disorder his wife is suffering from due to all the hardships. “I’m very sad that Mako was in bad shape, both mentally and physically, because of the false allegations.”
