Princess Mako, now Mako Komuro, and her husband Kei fled to New York after their controversial wedding. The couple wants to start a new life here. But that is not under a good star.

All good things come in threes! Kei Komuro, 30, must have thought the same thing when he passed the first half of the two-day bar exam for the third time on Tuesday. Ex-Princess Mako’s husband, 30, was spotted leaving the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City, footage is available to the British newspaper Daily Mail.

Princess Mako: Husband Kei is under pressure

Komuro wore a rumpled plaid button-down shirt, shorts, and trainers. His sleeves were untidy rolled up, revealing his green armband, which identified him as an examinee. Mako did not personally pick him up after the exam, Komuro got into an Uber alone and quickly drove away.

Kei Komuro graduated from Fordham University with a law degree in May 2021 and obtained a traineeship at Lowenstein Sandler LLP in Manhattan, where he advises companies and investors on venture capital financing, mergers and acquisitions. In July of last year, three months before his marriage to Mako, he applied for the New York State bar exam — in November 2021 it was revealed he had failed. He also failed on his second attempt in February of this year.

The pressure to finally make it on the third try is great. According to the “Reuters” news agency, many US law firms do not tolerate multiple failures, although trainee lawyers in the state of New York can repeat the bar exam as often as they like. If Kei doesn’t make it again, not only will he have to fear for his job at the law firm Lowenstein Sandler, his visa will also be in jeopardy.

Princess Mako and Kei Komuro met and secretly got engaged in 2013 at the International Christian University in Tokyo. They only made their wedding plans official in September 2017, but then had to postpone them due to financial problems in Kei’s family. In October of last year, they finally said yes during a dreary ceremony, and a short time later they turned their backs on Japan and the imperial family to find happiness in New York. By passing the bar exam, the couple could finally come to rest.
