This year’s Christmas season is unlikely to be an easy one for Princess Mary: the actually contemplative days are still overshadowed for her by the scandal surrounding Prince Frederik. Mary now shares a loving memory of her late mother.

Still before Princess Mary, 51, married Prince Frederik, 55, of Denmark in 2004, the native Australian had to cope with a serious loss in her immediate family: her mother died on November 20, 1997 at the age of just 55. Her death occurred after a heart operation, writes the Danish website “Se og Hør”. The current Crown Princess of Denmark became an orphan at the age of just 25, her mother was barely older than Mary is today when she died. The 26th anniversary of her death was a few days ago. “I lost my mother many years ago, but she is also the closest person to me in nature,” the 51-year-old is quoted by “Se og Hor”. Mary is convinced: “When you have the opportunity to be quiet in your head, you notice other things. This somehow gets lost in all the noise and pace of everyday life.” A feeling that Mary should know well even after recording her documentary: Dominating every day her husband Frederik’s alleged affair with the actress Genoveva Casanova the headlines of her adopted homeland.

While walking with Mette, she reports that she suddenly lost her husband in a car accident. Dealing with grief is an important theme of Mary’s documentary project, which focuses on the interaction between mental health and nature. Mary appears approachable and compassionate in the recordings. “I can very well understand that this is a time when you remember your husband,” she comforts her conversation partner Mette while taking a walk by the North Sea.
