Princess Mary will be the first Australian to ascend the Danish throne as Queen. Royal experts are already sure: This is not the only ace she has up her sleeve.
In a few days the time has come: on January 14, 2024, Princess Mary, 51, and Prince Frederik, 55, will become Queen Mary and King Frederik X of Denmark. In her last New Year’s speech, Queen Margrethe, 83, made clear her hopes that the Danes will welcome their new royal couple just as they did her 52 years ago. The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” quotes the Queen’s words: “You deserve it! Denmark deserves it.” A royal expert knows that Princess Mary in particular is very popular with the Danish people. And she is sure: Even as a subordinate queen to her husband, Mary will outshine Frederik.
Princess Mary: Can’t Frederik keep up with her even as king?
The Danish author Trine Villemann, 64, gives “Hello Magazine” an insight into the mood in Denmark in view of the impending abdication of Queen Margrethe. According to the Daily Mail, she is certain: “Mary really is the power behind the throne and will be for decades to come – there is no doubt about that.” She attributes this to the special qualities of the native Australian: In Villemann’s eyes, Princess Mary is a “much better communicator and speaker” than Prince Frederik. She also knows: “[Mary] has great skill and enormous talent, and the people of Denmark call her ‘King Mary’.”
Princess Mary has the royal lead in polls
A nickname that might hurt Prince Frederik a little – and it shows how popular Princess Mary is among the Danes. “Their approval ratings are higher than those of the other royals,” explains Trine Villemann. A survey by the Danish news agency “Ritzau” confirms this assumption: 80 percent of those surveyed are convinced that Princess Mary and Prince Frederik are suitable to succeed Queen Margrethe by birth. Furthermore, 82 percent of those surveyed believe that Frederik will be a good king; Princess Mary can look forward to a quota of 86 percent.
As surprising as the announcement of her abdication on December 31, 2023 came to the Danes, the people seem to be confident about the success of Queen Margrethe’s successor. Princess Mary and Prince Frederik probably couldn’t wish for a nice start to their reign: Due to her abdication, Queen Margrethe can still witness this step – and the support of her people is also certain for the future royal couple.
