Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit has not yet spoken about her skiing accident in December 2020. In a podcast, the princess reveals what really happened – and why it was really embarrassing.

It's December 21, 2020, and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, 47, is enjoying skiing on the ski slope in Uvdal, around a three-hour drive from Oslo. But when getting out of the ski lift, the princess's skis suddenly become wedged, she falls unhappy and breaks her tailbone. Then she has to spend one night in the hospital.

Princess Mette-Marit: "I laughed and cried"

"I really enjoy skiing. At the moment I have just started skiing again because I broke my tailbone before Christmas," Mette-Marit reveals to host Else Kåss Furuseth in the podcast "The Kåss Furuseths". Due to her accident, she missed a large part of the ski season. But that's not all. "It was so embarrassing. And not because I'm a Crown Princess or something, but mainly because I was sitting alone on the floor with my children and they thought it was embarrassing," says the 47-year-old. "I was in so much pain that I couldn't stop crying. I laughed and cried because it was simply the worst thing I have ever experienced," said the wife of Prince Haakon, 47.

Because of her accident, the family also had to change their Christmas plans: instead of spending Christmas Eve in their hut in Uvdal, Crown Princess Mette-Marit drove back to Skaugum with her husband and three children to celebrate with the whole royal family.

By the way: It is not the first time that Mette-Marit has injured herself while skiing: At Easter 2002, she walked on crutches after breaking her ankle.
