Princess Mette-Marit: Unexpected words about the beginning of love with Haakon

In the big interview on the occasion of her 50th birthday, Princess Mette-Marit speaks unusually privately about her family – and loses surprising words about the beginning of love with Prince Haakon.

When Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, 49, met her now-husband Prince Haakon, 49, at the Quart Music Festival in her hometown of Kristiansand in 1999, her whole life changed. In the same year she was seen on the front pages of several newspapers, and outrage spread among the people. The reason? Her middle-class origins, that she was a single mother and had a wild partying past. Queen Sonja, 86, and King Harald, 86, quickly brought Mette-Marit to their side. They got engaged in December 2000 and got married on August 25, 2001. Her father-in-law emphasized that she was anything but ordinary, and that she was extraordinary.

That was more than 20 years ago now. On Saturday, August 19, the Crown Princess turns 50 and in the big birthday interview with the Norwegian newspaper “Dagens Næringsliv” loses surprising words about her early days with Haakon.

Princess Mette-Marit: “I don’t find it interesting…”

When Princess Mette-Marit thinks back to her young love with Haakon, it doesn’t just seem like an eternity. Apparently she still has not only good memories of it today. It even goes so far that the future Queen of Norway is no longer really willing to talk about it.

“I find it uninteresting to talk about it. It’s not what I’m passionate about,” she admits in an interview with “Dagens Næringsliv”. It’s probably due to the odds the couple had to endure.

Mette-Marit publicly distances himself from drugs

In August 2001, shortly before her marriage, Mette-Marit went on the offensive. During a press conference, she spoke openly and with tears in her eyes about her excessive past: “I lived very excessively. Unfortunately, I can’t start life again from scratch and I paid dearly for my experiences. I distance myself from drugs.”

That’s the most important thing she wants to pass on to her children

Today, Princess Mette-Marit is particularly important to be a good mother to her children Marius Borg Høiby, 26, from a previous relationship, as well as Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 19, and Prince Sverre Magnus, 17, who she has with Haakon. They don’t usually grow up, Ingrid Alexandra will one day ascend the throne after her father.

It is all the more important to the Crown Princess that her children feel as little as possible. Mette-Marit explains: “It’s very important to me that they have a great feeling of freedom. That’s the most important thing I give my children: that they feel this freedom.”
