Soon Princess Sofia has to say goodbye to her older sister – Leonor goes to school in Wales from now on. A big turning point for Princess Sofia. For the first time she is “alone” at school and at home.

While Princess Leonor, 15, is slowly flinging, Princess Sofia, 14, stays in Spain with her parents King Felipe, 53, and Queen Letizia, 48; for the first time she is on her own. Usually she masters appearances in public together with her older sister, until the end they also attended the same school “Santa María de los Rosales” in Madrid.

That’s enough of that. Leonor will – like Princess Alexia, 16, from the Netherlands – visit UWC Atlantic College in St Donat’s Castle in Wales from September 8, 2021. Meanwhile, Sofia stays in Spain and starts the 3rd grade of the secondary level Educación Secundaria Obligatoria, ESO for short.

Princess Sofia will soon have to do without her sister Leonor

An unusual situation for the 14-year-old, who has always known her big sister close by since she first attended preschool at the age of only two. And at home too, in the Prinzenpavillon in Madrid, the focus of the parents will now shift completely to Sofia – with all the advantages and disadvantages that this additional attention brings with it. It will be a whole new experience for everyone in the family, with new challenges and opportunities.

However, Sofia will not have to do without Leonor for too long: The task of crown princess entails institutional obligations in her home country. Spain celebrates its national holiday on October 12, 2021 – and Leonor is expected as Princess of Asturias for the presentation of the Princess of Asturias Awards at the end of October.
