Princess Victoria: She must disclose her royal expenses

Does Princess Victoria now have to look at her household books? For years, the exact disclosure of the tax money used by King Carl Gustaf & Co. has been a contentious issue in Sweden. Now the royal family and the state have agreed on how the annual report should be in the future.

Soon the Swedes will know more precisely how high Princess Victoria’s appanage is and how it is used. For the first time, not only the “Schlosstaat” (administration of the castles) should be looked at more closely in the books, but also the “Hofstaat”, i.e. the royal family.

Princess Victoria: Danish and Norwegian royals are one step further

So far, no detailed information has apparently been found in the annual report by King Carl Gustaf, 75, and his family. That should change with the next summary, as “Sveriges Radio” reports. The Norwegian and Danish royals have shown it: they have been disclosing their numbers for a long time.

Reorganization of the Swedish royal family has initiated austerity measures

The Swedish monarch, however, has not yet had to take a closer look at his cards. However, as early as October 2019, with the reorganization of the royal family, he opted for a modern austerity course: At that time he decided to reduce the official representatives from 10 to 15 members. At this point, five of the king’s grandchildren – specifically the offspring of Prince Carl Philip, 42, and Princess Sofia, 37, as well as Princess Madeleine, 39, and Christopher O’Neill, 47, – had to be given the title “Royal Highness” take off.

Madeleine, Carl Philip and Sofia would only carry out official orders “as the king decides,” said their father and father-in-law in an official statement almost three years ago. The heir to the throne, Victoria and Prince Daniel, 48, with their children Princess Estelle, 10, and Prince Oscar, 6, are considered to be fully representative members of the royal family alongside Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia, 78.

In short: since then there has been a clear distinction between members of the royal family, who have official representational duties, and the royal family. Only members of the royal family are therefore entitled to compensation from the appanage pot. However, how exactly this money was distributed in the past has remained a big secret.

Invoice report shortly before publication

The next accounting report is to be published in April 2022. The budget item for the year is 149 million Swedish crowns (around 14.2 million euros). About half of it apparently goes to the “Slottsstaten” castle administration. The remainder finances the administration of the “enterprise” of the royal house, i.e. the representation obligations and also the costs and expenses of the royal family members who receive royal commissions.

Now, for the first time, “framework amounts” should be shown. On the one hand for the royal couple, who are entitled to a large part of the sum and on the other hand for Victoria and Daniel as well as Carl Philip and Sofia. As it is supposed to be, Madeleine, who lives with her family in the USA, is currently not receiving any appanage, as she is currently not carrying out any orders for the royal family.

No insight into private spending

The report should now also list in more detail what the money is being spent on. Jan Lindman, chief intendant of the Reichsmarschallamt of the royal family, told “Sveriges Radio” that part of the housing costs, certain transport costs and security costs or clothing costs also have to be covered.

But those who now expect to get more intimate insights into the private life of the Swedish royal will be disappointed. Private details are not expected. Information about own cars, boats, investments in buildings or stocks will not be listed.

As Lindman confirms, they were based on the Danish royal family. There, for example, the “court of the crown prince couple” gets a budget from which the “salaries” of Prince Frederik, 53, and Princess Mary, 50, are fed. Prince Joachim, 52, and Princess Marie, 46, as well as Princess Benedikte, 77, Queen Margrethe’s sister, 81, also receive allowances that are disclosed in the annual report.
