The US has taken into custody a suspected Russian spy extradited by Estonia in a possible prisoner swap for US prisoners in Russia. A spokesman for the US Department of Justice said that Vadim Konoshchenok had “suspected cutting-edge technologies and ammunition developed in the United States” for Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. Konoschtschenok was arrested in Estonia late last year while attempting to cross the border into Russia with US-made semiconductors and ammunition for sniper rifles. According to US officials, more than 450 kilograms of ammunition were seized.
According to the US judiciary, the man is said to have played an important role in a seven-member smuggling ring that was supposed to procure US electronics and other goods restricted by US export controls “under the guidance of Russian secret services”. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison for conspiracy, violating export controls, smuggling and money laundering.
His extradition comes at a time when Washington is attempting to negotiate the return of US citizens held by Moscow. These include ex-US soldier Paul Whelan, who has been jailed in Russia on espionage charges, and Wall Street reporter Evan Gershkovich. Moscow also accuses him of espionage, which Gershkovich categorically denies, as does the US government. US President Joe Biden said he would do everything in his power “to free Americans who are being held illegally in Russia or elsewhere.” This process is “underway”.
