- Around 3,000 people gathered on Theaterplatz in Basel on Saturday afternoon for the second national pro-Palestinian rally.
- The demonstration was peaceful, as the Basel-Stadt cantonal police announced on the short message portal X.
- The rally ended at 4 p.m. in the barracks area, where speeches were then given.
Rally participants traveled to Basel from all over Switzerland. The theater square was full at 2 p.m. The procession started shortly after 2:40 p.m. and was supposed to lead to the barracks via the Wettstein Bridge.
The participants followed a call from the new national umbrella organization Switzerland-Palestine, which was founded after the first national rally in Bern last November and which, according to its own information, consists of around 80 associations and interest groups.
The demonstrators are demanding, among other things, an immediate ceasefire and Switzerland’s commitment to military and economic sanctions against the State of Israel in the UN Security Council. In a call for the rally, the organizers spoke of an “ongoing genocide in Gaza”.
According to a statement, the organizers assume that 15,000 people took part in the demonstration. The police estimate that there were 2,000 to 2,500 people.
Those supporting the rally include the Swiss Peace Movement (SFB), Juso Bern and Zurich and the online medium “Baba News”.
