Probably not going to be a minister: SPD wants to make Nahles head of BA

Probably not going to be a minister
SPD wants to make Nahles BA boss

More than two years ago, the former SPD leader Nahles largely disappeared from the political scene after a heated argument in the party. She will not be given a position in the new, SPD-led cabinet either. Instead, according to a report, she should run the Federal Employment Agency.

According to her party’s will, the former SPD leader Andreas Nahles is apparently the head of the Federal Employment Agency (BA). This is reported by “Bild am Sonntag”, citing “information from the party”. As a result, Nahles will not be among those top SPD politicians whom the designated Chancellor Olaf Scholz will announce today that he wants to appoint them to his cabinet. According to “Bams”, Nahles herself signaled that she was “now” unavailable for a ministerial office.

In the summer of 2019, Nahles resigned as SPD leader and parliamentary group leader in the Bundestag in a dispute with large parts of the party and had largely withdrawn from politics and the public. This step was preceded by long quarrels in the SPD over responsibility for historically poor election results, the formation of the grand coalition after the 2017 election and the fundamental orientation of the SPD.

For a year now, Nahles has been President of the Federal Agency for Post and Communication, an authority subordinate to the Ministry of Finance, and an advisor to the EU Social Commissioner. According to “Bams”, Nahles could take up the new, considerably more prominent position as head of the BA on April 1st. Then the contract of the current incumbent, Detlef Scheele, expires. As a result, Scheele himself does not want to continue.

However, the future SPD-led government cannot appoint the BA leadership itself. The agency management is elected by the board of directors, one third of which is made up of representatives from employees, employers and public bodies. The federal government only has to confirm the choice.
