Problems in Innsbruck – Many pedestrians misunderstand their traffic lights

The misunderstanding begins with placement. Traffic lights for vehicles are located in front of the intersection to which they refer, while pedestrian traffic lights are located behind. It is normal (and legal) for cars to drive in on the last green flash. The driver doesn’t see that the traffic light turns red while you’re still in the intersection. Pedestrians see it when the traffic light turns red, but it doesn’t matter: “I can still enter the protection path at the last green flash. That’s the way it’s supposed to be,” emphasizes Michael Kaufmann.
