Problems with the emergency call – thunderstorms endangered climbers on the Glockner

An approaching thunderstorm was fatal for two mountaineers on Monday on the Großglockner in East Tyrol: Due to the adverse conditions, their descent was delayed – night fell. And then there were also reception problems during the emergency call.

The two Germans (32 and 34 years old) had already climbed the normal route to the summit of the Grossglockner. When we returned to the valley, a thunderstorm suddenly blew up. “As a result, their descent was delayed and night fell,” reported the police. Slipped over bare ice But that’s not all: in the area of the Eisleitel at an altitude of around 3640 meters, the 34-year-old climber slid on the partially bare ice around 10 p.m and slipped over steep terrain.
