They used the emergency situation to enrich themselves: Alfred Sauter and Georg Nüßlein gained negative notoriety during the pandemic through the so-called “mask affair”. It is now becoming apparent who will head the Bavarian Committee of Inquiry and when the processing should start.

Winfried Bausback is to lead the committee of inquiry into the mask business. The CSU parliamentary group unanimously nominated him at the meeting. “We want to provide full information. Because the people in our country rightly have no understanding that individuals have enriched themselves as elected officials in the pandemic,” said Bausback. As the strongest parliamentary group, the CSU provides the chairman of the legislature’s first committee of inquiry under the Bavarian Inquiry Committee Act.

The CSU MPs Alfred Sauter (Landtag) and Georg Nüßlein (Bundestag) had earned a lot in the pandemic by selling corona protective clothing to state buyers. The deals uncovered had cost both of their political careers. The committee of inquiry is now supposed to shed light on all transactions between the Free State and MPs in order to uncover possible further grievances.

Bausback emphasized that the affair had already had its first consequences: “As a first consequence of the mask affair, we have already introduced clear rules with the new law on parliament in order to rule out misuse of mandates and confusion of interests in the future.”

Now one wants to tackle the clarification of the allegations in the room. This is an important task: “As the CSU parliamentary group, we will be actively involved in the comprehensive investigation in the investigative committee and we are aware of our responsibility.”

The CSU parliamentary group will appoint MPs Wolfgang Fackler, Alexander Flierl, Alfred Grob and Tanja Schorer-Dremel as additional members of the investigation committee. The committee of inquiry will probably be set up by the plenary at the beginning of December and will probably meet for its constituent meeting this year.
