Professional immersion, a system to diversify and secure recruitment

On the first floor of a large house in Château-Thierry (Aisne), on the fourth day of her immersion in home help, Laetitia Evrard seems satisfied. Struggling to find work for two years, after moving to the region, this 41-year-old former childcare worker has just found a part-time permanent contract in the city’s O2 franchise agency. Small originality, the signature of his contract is preceded by a period of simulation in a professional environment (PMSMP). This device will allow him to check if he likes the job, and his employer to measure if he is satisfied.

Created in 2014 by the law on vocational training, the PMSMP is a form of observation internship lasting from one week to one month, during which the candidate – very often job seeker – is not paid (in addition of his unemployment benefits, if he receives any), but where the missions cannot replace those of an absent employee. In 2022, 180,000 PMSMPs were prescribed by Pôle emploi, with an average duration of forty-two hours.

“This concerns many sectors, a lot of the tertiary sector (administrations, education, social, commerce), constructiondescribes Paul Bazin, deputy director of Pôle emploi, in charge of the service offer. We try to promote it in professions that are struggling to attract people, by inviting them to target diversified profiles: the hotel and catering industry and the transport sector, health. »

Immersion concerns low-skilled trades, but also executives. The Association for Executive Employment (Apec) has been able to prescribe PMSMPs since the fall of 2022. “In our studies, we observe a real appetite among working executives to reorient themselves, but few take stepsexplains Laetitia Niaudeau, deputy director of Apec. Here, it’s a way to facilitate the relationship, to test and to get known by potential employers. It is also interesting for trades that do not have a good reputation and small unknown companies. »

Three typical profiles

Paul Bazin identifies three typical profiles for professional immersion, of roughly equal frequency: “Discovering a profession that is recruiting, confirming a professional project and the situation where the applicant is sure that he wants to work in this profession, and would like to see how it works “in real life”. »

On-site experimentation “allows the candidate to be reassured, to say to himself “this is really the job I want to do”. And, it’s up to me, the recruiter, to go beyond the theory, to validate what I was able to grasp during the various interviews with the candidate.believes Laurent Brangeon, director of the O2 agency in Château-Thierry. If I immediately send the person to the home, with a risk, when the mission does not please, of losing the candidate, of generating customer dissatisfaction, everyone is a loser. I did five immersion periods, I validated four candidates. The only one who left was his choice. “There are dropouts, but they are positive, considers M. Bazin. We avoid locking ourselves into a working relationship that is not good. »
