Progress, but no cure: Christoph Daum has had more than 20 chemo treatments

Progress but no cure
Christoph Daum has had more than 20 chemo treatments

Christoph Daum has been fighting cancer for around a year and is also achieving success. But there can be no talk of a cure yet. The almost 70-year-old hopes that “more is possible” – and that the disease can soon be controlled.

Football coach Christoph Daum has already endured 22 rounds of chemotherapy after his cancer diagnosis. The 69-year-old explained in an interview with “Bild” that he is doing quite well so far. “The therapies have a positive effect, the cancer cells shrink slightly.” But he was not cured of the cancer, Daum continued. “Our goal was to turn an acute condition into a chronic one, to control the disease. I hope there can be more.”

In autumn 2022, Christoph Daum made his cancer public on social media. He received the diagnosis “as part of a routine examination,” he wrote alongside a photo of himself and his doctor, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Wolf, on Instagram. He has been receiving treatment since then and the therapy was “working very well” for him, Daum explained at the time.

In May it became known that Christoph Daum had to be treated in an intensive care unit at a US hospital. “The doctors gave me the OK to visit my son in the USA. Dandelion! I got pneumonia and almost fell into a coma,” he said.

“This sentence touched me very much”

Christoph Daum celebrates his 70th birthday on October 24th. On this occasion, Sky is dedicating the documentary “Daum – Triumphs & Scandals” (October 27) to him. In it, Daum meets old companions such as Matthias Sammer, Reiner “Calli” Calmund and Rudi Völler, but also his former opponent Uli Hoeneß. Both buried their hatchets a long time ago and learned to value each other as people. A few months ago, Hoeneß called Daum and wished him a speedy recovery.

Daum now said: “We treat each other with respect and have both learned a lot. He told me: Only two great personalities can fight each other like that. This sentence touched me very much.”
