Google’s free service against denial of service attacks, Project Shield is now offered to Ukrainian institutions, embassies and governments around the world.
The war waged by Russia in Ukraine is played out on the military ground, on the ground or in the air, but also on the digital ground, more than ever. Google provides its infrastructure to protect against DDoS attacks
In the current context, and after seeing DDoS attacks against various Ukrainian websites, including those of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior, or the Liveuamap platform which offers maps to help users find information and news, Google has decided to expand eligibility for Project Shield.
From now on, Ukrainian institutions but also embassies around the world and certain governments located in the immediate vicinity of the conflict can benefit from this protection, so that they ” can stay online, protect themselves and continue to offer their essential services Google notes.
In detail, Project Shield allows Google to eliminate malicious traffic through its DDoS infrastructure and tools. If a website is the subject of an attack of this type (which, it should be remembered, is intended to bring down or seriously slow down the activity of a site by overloading it with traffic through multiple connections), the Google’s servers act as a shield and allow the site to function normally, with the traffic causing the attack being blocked.
Multiple features to enhance real-time monitoring of eligible sites
Today, Google says more than 150 Ukrainian websites, some run by news outlets, use Project Shield. ” We encourage all eligible organizations to enroll in Project Shield so that our systems can block these attacks and keep websites online. “, insists Google, which has already taken certain measures to protect the population in the context of the Russian invasion.
In addition to protecting against sophisticated attacks, Project Shield offers customizable casing functionality, which improves website performance and saves website bandwidth. Users can also invalidate certain caches, depending on the needs of the site. The use of JavaScript cookies and the IP block list are some of the other features offered by Google as part of Project Shield.
Finally, the service offers its users an analysis of their website in real time, with an overview of the traffic but also of the error rates and even of the savings made in terms of bandwidth, which can help to anticipate its reaction in emerging threat.
