Quincy Promes freaks out at a family party and stabs his cousin in the knee. For this, the former national player of the Netherlands is sentenced to prison. The 31-year-old is not at the trial and may not be returning to his home country.
Dutch footballer Quincy Promes has been sentenced to a year and a half in prison for aggravated assault. The former international was found guilty by the Amsterdam Criminal Court. The 31-year-old stabbed a cousin in the leg with a knife at a family gathering after an argument. His lawyer announced an appeal. Promes was originally charged with attempted murder, but prosecutors later commuted the charge due to lack of evidence.
Due to his prominence, the verdict was now harder than usual, at least one year in prison is planned in such cases. “The court has taken into account that the suspect is a professional footballer and well-known Dutchman and therefore has a role model function,” it said in a statement. The court also charged that he had not accepted any responsibility for the crime. Promes, who scored seven goals in 50 international matches, was under contract with Ajax Amsterdam at the time.
The offensive player has been playing for Spartak Moscow again since February 2021, where he was under contract from 2014 to 2018, and was not present at the verdict. He is said to be in Moscow. It is unclear if and when he will start his sentence. According to Russian media reports last December, Promes applied for Russian citizenship, and if he enters his homeland he must expect immediate arrest.
Evidence of Promes’ guilt came primarily from tapped telephone calls. He had already been observed by the police in connection with another crime. Promes is suspected of being involved in smuggling 1,300 kilograms of cocaine. He denies these allegations.
