A total of 48 teams, including FC Bayern, FSV Mainz 05, 1. FC Nürnberg and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, took part in the final tournament. In the preliminary round, the Young Bulls met 1. FC Eislingen (4-0), Viktoria Aschaffenburg (2-0), 1. FC Erlensee (0-0), FC Solothurn (0-0) and the “Teufel” from Kaiserslautern (3:0). Without conceding a goal, the Mozartstadters marched into the knockout round, where they first defeated VfB Stuttgart 3-0 in Fieberbrunn, then eliminated AKA St. Pölten with a 1-0 win, and a little later Unterhaching 1-0 to throw to the winning race.
