Promotion panic at Hamburger SV
“At the moment everything sucks”

Hamburger SV will have to write off the direct promotion to the Bundesliga for good. Due to the disappointing draw against Karlsruher SC, the Hanseatic League, without a win for five games, are already five points behind the table runner-up SpVgg Greuther Fürth.

Hamburger SV has hardly any realistic chances of direct promotion to the Bundesliga. The North Germans parted from Karlsruher SC 1: 1 (0: 0) in the Volksparkstadion and have three game days before the end of the 2nd Bundesliga five points behind Greuther Fürth, second in the table. In addition, the third-placed hamburgers Holstein Kiel is in the neck with three games and only two points less than the hamburgers. Simon Terodde scored the opening goal for the hosts against KSC with a hand penalty (56th minute); Daniel Gordon equalized immediately with a header (57th).

The completely frustrated coach Daniel Thioune admitted: “It doesn’t make sense to talk about the teams around us anymore. We don’t need to talk about things that can’t be realized if we don’t win football games.” The “kicker” already called these sentences a “surrender”.

“That was too little. In terms of the result and the game. At the moment everything sucks,” said HSV defender Rick van Drongelen to the pay-TV channel Sky. The locals continued their desperate performance in the second half of the season. The team has been without a win for five games, in the past twelve games HSV only managed two point threes and crashed from its comfortable position after a strong first half of the season. “The basic virtues were not right,” complained HSV goalkeeper Sven Ulreich at Sky. He also complained about the weakness in the duel and the lack of chances: “Of course we have to worry and don’t need to talk about the promotion first.”

Against Karlsruhe, the Hanseatic players only played for 30 minutes, went resolutely into the duels and looked more determined than last. But there was often a lack of precision. After the initial pressure phase, the hamburgers subsided. The guests, who with eight wins this season are among the strongest away teams in the league, did without early pressing and gave the hosts plenty of space. So Hamburg had more of the game, but without getting good chances. The KSC, on the other hand, could have taken the lead through Marvin Wanitzek (33rd) – but he narrowly missed. “That was a very sensible away game,” said KSC coach Christian Eichner. “You can be proud of that as a coach.”

Thioune had increasingly relied on experienced forces, whom he believed to be more stable with the nervous strain in the ascent race. “We have to be free in the pear,” was his demand. But even they could not give the broken game a line. Terodde from the penalty spot had also shown nerves. He scored his 21st goal of the season in the margin after goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck had initially parried.

“We are dependent on our opponents. It will be difficult to get points,” said van Drongelen. “But we have to look ahead.” The KSC also demonstrated its self-confidence with the supposed promotion favorites of this season. In the third game within a week, Baden did not go top speed, but had the HSV attacks largely under control. In the past eight games, they have only won one, but drawn six.
