Protection for merchant ships – Germany sends warship “Hessen” to the Red Sea – News

After the USA and Great Britain, the European Union is now also sending warships to the Red Sea – international freighters are to be protected from attacks by the Houthi rebels. The EU foreign ministers decided this a few days ago. Germany is also taking part in the operation with the frigate “Hessen”. Today the Bundestag approved the operation with a large majority. SRF Germany correspondent Simone Fatzer explains the reasons for this decision and its implications.

Why was the decision in the German parliament so clear?

The okay came about so easily because the largest opposition faction, the CDU and CSU, also approved of this effort. Taking part in this EU mission is a given. A common security policy in Europe is an ongoing issue. Tangible economic interests are in the foreground here: it’s about one very important trade route from which Europe primarily benefits greatly. Germany has a lot of self-interest in ensuring that more merchant ships can pass through the strait again.

What is known about the warship “Hessen”?

It is a very modern warship. This strongest ship in Germany was developed for escort and maritime control. The “Hessen” has an extremely good radar system and can monitor the airspace over a distance of 400 kilometers. It has various guns on board and is also intended to intercept missiles and drones in an emergency. These have a very long range of up to 160 kilometers. She has a helicopter on board that specializes in locating submarines. However, it is not known exactly what is on board.

Frigate Hessen is sent into the sea.

How risky is the use?

The operation is considered the Navy’s most dangerous in recent decades. Everything indicates that the Houthis will also attack this German ship. The use of live weapons is very likely. The Houthi anti-ship missiles are very dangerous. The Houthis have combat drones and dangerous speedboats with explosive devices. The German soldiers are trained for this, but their skills have not yet been required to this extent.

Is Germany taking a leading role in this EU mission?

Germany has no official lead. But Germany’s role within the EU remains central. Berlin has tried to strengthen its leadership role in recent months. But one fact remains in the Red Sea: The Europeans are dependent on the USA, which is also attacking Houthi positions in Yemen. If the USA withdraws there, Europe will face enormous challenges. Germany would therefore have great interest in being prepared for this.
