The police in the German city of Cologne are taking special protective measures due to a danger warning for Cologne Cathedral, they announced.
Details of the available findings will not be commented on due to ongoing investigations by the State Police.
The tip to the police refers to New Year’s Eve, operations manager Michael Esser is quoted in the message. Nevertheless, “everything will be done to ensure the safety of cathedral visitors on Christmas Eve” on Saturday evening, said Esser.
Increased protective measures also in Austria

The security authorities in Austria have also increased their protective measures in public spaces in Vienna and in the federal states. The Vienna State Police Department wrote this in a statement. The reason for this is calls from terrorist actors across Europe to attack Christian events – especially around December 24th.
According to the announcement, places or objects in particular that are at risk are increasingly monitored or guarded. These precautionary measures serve to maintain the general safety of the people in Austria, it goes on to say. According to the police, the focus is on churches, religious events, especially church services, and Christmas markets.
In the evening, the police closed the cathedral to the public and began searching Cologne Cathedral with a large contingent and sniffer dogs. According to the police report, it should then be locked. All visitors to masses on Christmas Eve should also be subjected to a check before entering the church, it is said.
