  • Tens of thousands of people protested on the streets of Budapest on Sunday.
  • Among other things, they demonstrated against ideology in culture and society and the control of the media.
  • Protests have erupted across the country in recent weeks.

If the Prime Minister of Hungary, Victor Orban, has his way, culture and society should be Christian and nationalistic. The teachers in the country do not like this. In nationwide protests, organized by the teachers’ union, they demand better pay for teachers, ideology-free curricula and the right to strike for teachers. According to the union, there were 147 protests in 61 locations.

In addition to the teachers, others also protested on Sunday. They also oppose the control of the state and private media, as well as Orban’s good relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Usually October 23rd is celebrated with big government rallies in Budapest, with a celebratory speech by the head of government. This time this did not happen.
