Proton Mail arrives in desktop version on Windows and macOS

Used by many activists or journalists, Proton messaging is intended to be quite exemplary in terms of respect for data and cybersecurity. As Andy Yen, CEO of Proton, explains, while it is certain that most users prefer to access their email through a web browser, the software to be installed confers certain advantages, particularly with regard to management. emails in offline mode.

Although many people use their email from their browsers, desktop applications offer some advantages, such as better offline support. For this reason, we decided to launch a desktop app, something even Gmail doesn’t offer. With our support for third-party email applications through Proton Mail Bridge, users now have a comprehensive set of options for accessing their encrypted emails from their desktop.

Fifty new features announced

Among the new features announced today is the ability to forward an email to another Proton user without losing end-to-end encryption. Bart Butler, CTO of Proton, discusses this subject and explains the technical challenge faced by the engineers in charge of developing this feature.

Messages sent between Proton Mail accounts are always end-to-end encrypted by default. But maintaining end-to-end encryption of messages transmitted to other Proton users presented a huge technical challenge. We needed to figure out how to re-encrypt messages intended for different recipients without the server being able to access the content. Our crypto engineers made this possible, a first for encrypted email.

In the batch of updates announced today, we spot the Snooze function. This will allow you to suspend a notification received by email, for a defined period of time, in order to make it reappear at a more appropriate time. Let’s also mention some features related to productivity such as the preview of attachments in messaging or the improvements linked to the Proton calendar module. The latter is now eight times faster and the user can perform end-to-end encrypted searches on the Web.
