ProtonMail changes name and offers new offers

2

Don’t call it ProtonMail anymore, just Proton. This May 25, 2022, the Swiss publisher of the email service which emphasizes respect for privacy has changed. Visual changes, but also marketing.

In 2014, ProtonMail launched the first end-to-end encrypted email service to respect user privacy. Unlike most e-mail services, the messages are not readable by the service provider. At the origin of the project, there is Andy Yen, then a young researcher at CERN. With a doctorate in physics from Harvard University and degrees in physics and economics from Caltech, Andy Yen quickly became interested in privacy on the Internet and developed the idea of more user-friendly services. people. Thus was born ProtonMail. Since then, the company established in Switzerland has grown significantly and now employs 400 people and should very soon reach 70 million users.

Over the years, ProtonMail has been enriched with other services such as a VPN (Proton VPN), a calendar (Proton Calendar) and more recently an online storage space (Proton Drive) with always as a mantra, the end-to-end encryption. In the future, an email anonymization solution should complete the offer.

A unified offer

If the website now sports a new visual identity and the ProtonMail interface has received a welcome little refresh, it is of course the renewal of offers that is at the heart of this launch. These now offer access to all services (email, calendar, VPN and storage) with more or less restrictions and options. The first level is always free and allows you to try Proton without losing any euro. However, storage, shared by all applications, is limited to 500 MB (up to 1 GB over time) and VPN limited to three countries. The complete offer at 10 €/month allows access to the complete services of Proton with 500 GB of storage, a faster VPN and present in 63 countries. Note that Proton also offers offers for businesses starting at €7/month.

Other encrypted email services

While Proton has more or less paved the way for privacy-friendly services, other solutions are currently available. We are thinking in particular of Infomaniak, another Swiss company, which also offers a complete service with an email, a calendar, an office suite, a videoconferencing and file transfer system, all free of charge. For the email part only, you can also consult the offers of Tutanota or the German service Posteo.
