VSfriday 13 January was polling day for PS members, who had to vote during the Congress for the orientation texts of the two candidates for the post of First Secretary of the party. In this first battle, it is Olivier Faure, the outgoing First Secretary, who largely wins with 49.15% of the vote, against 30.51% for Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol 30.51%, according to the final results communicated by the PS. The two men will face each other next Thursday in a duel to run for the head of the PS before a congress at the end of January in Marseille. The third text of orientation, that presented by Hélène Geoffroy, collected 20.34% of the votes, specifies the commission of collation of the results.

“The activists placed me very largely in the lead, at almost 50%, and made a choice of clarity”, explained Olivier Faure in an interview with the Parisian, ensuring to have “on this basis, an absolute majority in the national council”. The activists have “reinforced our desire to unite the left and environmentalists”, he assured.

11,277 votes against 7,001, out of 22,944 votes cast

Faure’s text received 11,277 votes out of the 22,944 cast, against 7,001 for Mayer-Rossignol’s. This vote gave rise to a battle of figures within the Socialist Party between the outgoing First Secretary and his challenger, the mayor of Rouen.

But Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, more critical of Nupes, assured that his rival would cap at 48.5%, which makes him “minority” and therefore “unable to lead the party”.

The vote of the members counts for two-thirds in the composition of the National Council, the remainder being obtained by the elections of the first federal secretaries. The members will vote again next Thursday to formally choose their First Secretary.
