Olivier Faure, who continues to claim his re-election as first secretary of the PS, said Monday that he had offered Nicolas-Mayer Rossignol and Hélène Geoffroy a “collegial leadership” but not “three or four first secretaries” as they would like. The outgoing first secretary was speaking after a meeting with his two competitors, united against him on a line of skepticism at Nupes and La France insoumise, at the PS headquarters in Ivry-sur-Seine (Val-de -Marl).

“I told them that I was in favor of a collegial tool”

“They asked me to organize a board,” reported Olivier Faure. “I told them that I was in favor of a collegial tool, which allows everyone to feel associated with all the decisions that are those of a political party”, but not with “three or four first secretaries”. Because he recalled having collected, on the first vote on the orientation texts on January 12, “49% of the votes, a second (Nicolas-Mayer-Rossignol, editor’s note) 30% and a third 20%”, so we do not cannot “put everyone on the same step of the podium”.

Moreover, he noted, “no one has asked to reopen the verification committee” (responsible for reviewing the vote of the activists) as was still the case in the morning. The deputy of Seine-et-Marne also refused the idea of a new vote, claimed by Hélène Geoffroy, leader of the Dutch. By the Marseille congress, which will take place from Friday to Sunday, “it will be difficult” and “I am not sure that in the period which opens (challenging the pension reform, editor’s note) the priority either to come back to vote the next few weeks”, explained Olivier Faure, adding that his rival the mayor of Rouen was of the same opinion.

Another meeting organized before the Marseille congress

The two men also indicated that the first secretary had offered Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol the head of the list for the 2024 Europeans, refused by the latter. The three participants in the meeting indicated that in order to find an agreement, they would meet again before the congress in Marseilles after having consulted their supporters. “I’m hopeful that everyone will come to their senses and something positive and collective,” said Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol.

The meeting “was very serious and very serious because the situation is dramatic for the PS”, “we told ourselves things clearly, we must now find the solutions”. A new count on Sunday, disputed, gave 51.09% of the vote to the incumbent against 48.91% to his rival.
