A developer managed to get the PS-VR2 on PC, but it will not be (for the moment) within the reach of everyone.

A small feat in itself, Sony’s VR headset not being compatible with systems other than the PS5 at first glance due to a DSC blockage, circumvented via the development of an open source graphics driver from AMD on Linux.

Available since February 22, 2023, the PS VR2 blows hot and cold for Sony. Despite a good technical sheet, a price that is a bit too salty and a catalog of games that are currently quite sparse prevent it from fully shining.

The fact that the headset is in principle designed to work only on PS5 also presented itself as an additional obstacle. However, this did not prevent iVRy, a developer specializing in the field, from trying to circumvent this major obstacle.

After months of trying, he finally managed to get the PS VR2 to work on a PC through an open-source AMD graphics driver on Linux. This made it possible to overcome a blocking of the DSC by the helmet, making it technically impossible to use it on a PC. Proof in support, since we can see it browsing the SteamVR reception on the Sony helmet, and this at 120 Hz.

Limited access

In principle, Linux users equipped with AMD hardware could therefore already use the iVRy driver to run the PS VR2 on their PC. For the others, however, the procedure is likely to be much more delicate.

The developer of the driver in question has, in fact, indicated that in this case it will be necessary to have additional hardware in the form of an adapter. Unfortunately, iVRy says such a thing doesn’t yet exist. The next step to making the PS VR2 work on any PC is therefore that the famous adapter is mass produced. A prospect for the time being still very distant, even a bit utopian.

Even though Sony is not actively seeking to block the use of its VR headset on anything other than the PS5, the Japanese giant could have a say in the matter. On the other hand, such an option could offer a healthy boost to PS VR2. The future will therefore tell us whether or not this can one day become a (virtual) reality.
