In a recent blog post, Sony quietly announced that its PSVR2 will be compatible with PCs in the coming months. Let’s be clear, we notice a certain hesitation on the part of the firm at the idea of making this announcement. Indeed, we can see there a certain admission of failure on its part, proving that the VR headset has failed to find its audience on PlayStation.
Virtual reality has always been a thorny subject for the video game industry. Sometimes the next big revolution in the medium, sometimes a simple experiment that is struggling to break through to the general public, it seems that manufacturers don’t really know where to stand when it comes to this technology. Sony, for its part, has a very special place in this market since, true to form, the company has always made its own VR headset exclusive to its console.
A strategy that clearly does not pay off. Both iterations of PS VR were commercial failures and the games developed for it quickly fell into obscurity. In short, exclusivity no longer works – Microsoft has understood this – forcing Sony to open up to other machines. Unsurprisingly, the manufacturer has just announced, very discreetly, the upcoming compatibility of its PlayStation VR2 with PCs.

Surprisingly enough to point out, the announcement is far from having been the subject of an entire blog post. Sony preferred a simple short paragraph, in the middle of other announcements, thus making it easily missed. In addition, the firm does not give any specific date and instead opts for caution, indicating that compatibility for this year is not yet a certain matter.

Clearly, PS VR2 is no longer a priority for Sony. While the company is opening more and more to the PC market, and given the disappointing sales of the VR headset, it was only a matter of time before the manufacturer announced the news. As for knowing when compatibility will arrive, you’ll have to be patient. Before that, Sony will have to supply the PS5 catalog, which looks set to be very dry in the months to come.
