PS5: Accessibility Tags, a handy new feature coming to PlayStation Store very soon

For several years, manufacturers have been making more and more efforts to make their experiences accessible to all audiences. More and more productions are thus offering options for customizing the experience that can make our games more comfortable according to our desires, especially for players with visual, hearing or motor impairments.

Sony Interactive Entertainment will take another step in this direction by adding a nice new feature to the Playstation Store PS5 this week. A store update will introduce about fifty beacons, making it easier to learn about a game’s accessibility options before purchasing, or even to search for titles by the options they offer. The operation of these beacons has been detailed on the PlayStation-Blogas you can read below.

We are committed to offering ever more accessible games for all players. Also, we are delighted to announce today that Accessibility Beacons will be rolling out to PlayStation Store on PS5 console this week.

With these accessibility tags, game developers can provide a detailed overview of the accessibility features supported in their games. While browsing the various game portals on the PlayStation Store for PS5, you will be able to view the list of accessibility features by pressing the Triangle key (if the game you select supports accessibility tags). These include visual and audio accessibility settings, DualSense controller options, difficulty settings, and online communication features, like chat transcription.

Accessibility Tags will be available for PS5 and PS4 games from PlayStation Store for PS5. If both versions are available (PS5 and PS4), you can compare each version’s accessibility tags via a drop-down menu.

With accessibility tags, you can easily see if the game you want to play has the accessibility options you are looking for. Here is a sampling of the approximately 50 accessibility tags available to developers. They are divided into six categories:

  • Visual accessibility features, such as plain text, enlarged text, alternate colors, audio cues, and directional audio cues;
  • Audio features, such as volume controls, mono sound, screen reader, and alternate visual cues;
  • Subtitle options, such as subtitle size, plain subtitles, and enlarged subtitles;
  • Control options, such as key reassignment, joystick sensitivity, and the ability to play without having to hold down keys or quickly press keys, and without motion detection;
  • Gameplay options, such as difficulty settings, ability to skip puzzles, simplified Quick Time Events, and game speed adjustment;
  • Online communication options, like text or voice chat transcription and ping communication.

PlayStation Store Accessibility Tags for PS5 will be released gradually this week. At launch, various games will support accessibility tags, including Days Gone, Death Stranding Director’s Cut, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, God of War, God of War Ragnarök, Gran Turismo 7, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Returnal. We are only beginning the rollout of this feature and are working with many developers to implement this feature into their PS5 game portals over the coming weeks and months.

In addition to the accessibility settings already present in the interface of the PS5 console, the accessibility tags will allow you to customize your gaming experience on PS5 according to your specific needs. These tags represent the latest step in making games more accessible, adding to inclusive PlayStation Studios games and future products such as Project Leonardo.

Thank you for your unwavering support. We look forward to hearing your thoughts on this feature and how we can continue to improve accessibility in games for our community.

The precise arrival date of the functionality has not been specified, but it will therefore be before this Friday, April 7. Discreetly or via a new update of the firmware ? If you don’t already have a PlayStation 5, the bundle with God of War Ragnarok is currently sold from €469.75 at Amazon.co.uk.
